Tips to be safe on msn mesengers.1) Create a nickname
This is the name you use to identify yourself to members. Like your e-mail address, it should be inoffensive, non-identifiable and non-gender specific. Posting under the name, “SexySueSmith17” is just asking for trouble. Try to use a Nickname that is not revealing your gender, age etc like “BlueBear.”
To be safe, You can check to see if your details appear online by running your name through a search engine. The most popular way to do this is to ‘Google’ yourself. Go to http://www.google.com/ and type in your name, in inverted commas, for example: “Sue Smith” and see what is returned. Of course, the results could be any number of people with the same name as you but it is always worth checking.
2) Never give out your personal details.
They will give all sorts of excuses just to get it. DO NOT BE FOOLED. They can send out all sorts of things that make us uncomftable or scared.
3) Do not send your picture to anyoine.
They can edit it and make it into an embarassing photo or a pornography. This may lead to cyber bullying. No matter how much they beg or persuade you, never let them see what you look like.
4) Dont meet up with any strangers you meet online.
They can be a bad person (rapist, kidnappers, etc) If you ever do want to meet someone up, make sure it is a public place and make sure an adult go with you.
5) Email security:
Be careful where you post/submit your email id on public forums. Share it only with known people. Do not download attachments or files received through emails sent by unknown persons.
6) Password protection:
Never give your password to anyone.
When selecting a password, make sure it is a combination of alphabets, numerals and special characters
7) At a cyber café:
Never surf from a cyber café if you are keying in any sensitive data. The computer may have a program running in the background that is storing all your information.
Be careful of inquisitive surfers around.
Always logout of all your messengers and any mailbox you have open, before you leave.
8) Know who everyone is on your buddy list.
Buddy lists have a way of getting passed around and shared. The wrong people could easily creep in.
9) Don't forward any emails or IMs that were meant for your eyes only.
Respect other people's privacy.
better to be safe than sorry.
